Fitts' Law


Description: ( Fitts' law is a predictive model of human movement ).

  Fitts' Law states the " It is faster to hit the larger targets closer to you than the smaller targets further from you ".

The times takes to hit the target in below picture is comparatively less than the above picture


Target is Large and near


  • For designing of things this law is helpful and understands the movement of the people
  • Brake system in cars.... Brake pedal is bigger and nearer compared to accelerator.
  • Makes it faster and easier to hit at the time of emergency (Target Brake)


Consider a Computer monitor... If the icons placed at corners of the screen
  • It is easy for user to access the icons if placed at the corners
  • Corner placement makes the icon (target) infinitely sized , as cursor stops at the end

  • Thumbnails/pictures are clickable.
  • Target is now image which larger than menu tab.
  • Ease of user access.
  • Distance from the target is reduced.

Using Fitts' Law



Scroll down bar on the monitor :
  • Target is small marked in red. Distance is considerable.
  • Dragging every time makes the process slow.
